The Japanese Chamber of Commerce Northern California recently hosted an insightful event titled "Beyond Uncertainty: How to Transform Anxiety into Opportunities" at the GLOBIS USA office in San Francisco. Led by the insightful moderator Ms. Tomomi Komura, CEO of CREATRY INC, the panelists participated in a dynamic discussion that provided valuable perspectives on navigating uncertainty.

The panelists included: 

Masa Ishii: A Silicon Valley venture capitalist and founder of AZCA, Inc., focusing on U.S.-Japan high-tech collaboration since 1985. Formerly with IBM Japan and McKinsey & Company, he has advised Logitech during its IPO and incubated numerous Japan-origin startups. He also served as Senior Executive Advisor to Xerox PARC.

Daishi Matsukura: Daishi is Co-Founder and Co-CEO at Philosophy Technologies, a firm that fosters philosophical exploration. A curiosity-driven explorer, he has diverse experience in space, technology, and philosophy. As Chief Mission Officer at ispace, he led global fundraising for space missions. He previously worked at Morgan Stanley and holds a PhD in Astrophysics from Tokyo Tech.

Osho Taigu: The 31st Head Monk of Fukugonji Temple nestled in the verdant hills of Aichi Prefecture, embarked on a profound mission in 2014. Committed to demystifying Zen Buddhism, he undertook the task of creating accessible content that imparts wisdom in both gentle and, at times, stern ways. His contribution lies in his renowned 1Q1A Japanese Youtube channel, where he meticulously addresses letters pouring in from across Japan.

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow JCCNC members and guests, and gain fresh perspectives on navigating uncertainty. Throughout the session, mindfulness and awareness were framed as essential skills for enhancing our ability to sense and respond to our environments effectively.

Here are some key takeaways:

• Sometimes you choose your path, and sometimes it’s chosen for you. No matter how much you initially resist it, you may find yourself in the right place, as Osho-san shared about his journey to becoming a monk after years of rejecting his calling.

• Excelling in something doesn’t mean you must always choose the most dangerous path; it’s wise to select challenges that ensure your safe return, much like choosing a hike that guarantees you’ll come back alive!

• Engaging in small, positive actions daily, such as picking up garbage, can significantly boost our sense of confidence and instill a sense of purpose as members of humanity.

• Passion plays a crucial role in our daily lives, inspiring us to make meaningful decisions that align with our values and aspirations.

• Being flexible and maintaining an open mind enable us to pivot during difficult times, allowing us to adapt and thrive in the face of challenges.

These kinds of events inspire us to embrace uncertainty as a pathway to growth. They serve as a powerful reminder that we are not alone in our struggles; together, we can support one another in transforming anxiety into opportunities. By sharing our experiences and insights, we cultivate a sense of community that encourages resilience and innovation. Embracing uncertainty not only enriches our personal journeys but also strengthens our collective ability to thrive in an ever-changing world.

2025年5月27日、北カリフォルニア日本商工会議所（JCCNC）は、サンフランシスコのGLOBIS USAオフィスにて、「Beyond Uncertainty: 不安をチャンスに変えるには？」と題したセミナーを開催。モデレーターはCREATRY INCのCEO、幸村友美氏。鋭い洞察と温かな進行のもと、登壇者たちは不確実性にどう向き合い、乗り越えるかについて多角的な視点から語り合った。

登壇者：

石井正純（Masa Ishii）

シリコンバレーのベンチャーキャピタリスト、AZCA, Inc.創業者。1985年より日米ハイテク連携に注力。IBM Japan、McKinseyを経て、LogitechのIPO支援、日本発スタートアップの育成に携わる。Xerox PARCの上級顧問も歴任。

セミナーの要点：

このセミナーは、JCCNC会員やゲストが交流しながら、不確実性の時代をどう生き抜くかを考える貴重な機会となった。全体を通して、「マインドフルネス（気づき）」と「意識的な行動」が、環境に柔軟に対応するための内なる力として強調された。

印象的な学び：

道を選ぶのではなく、道に選ばれることもある

大愚和尚は、僧侶になることを長年拒んでいたが、最終的にはその道に導かれた経験を語り、「受け入れる勇気」の大切さを示した。

挑戦は「生きて帰れる範囲」で選ぶ

松倉氏は、能力があるからといって常に危険な道を選ぶ必要はないと語り、登山にたとえて「無事に下山できる道を選ぶ知恵」を共有した。

小さな善行が自信と目的意識を育む

毎日のゴミ拾いのような小さな行動が、自信を高め、人としての目的意識を育てる力になると語られた。

情熱は人生の羅針盤

情熱は、価値観や目指す姿に沿った選択を後押しする力。日々の暮らしの中で、静かに私たちを導いてくれる。

柔軟性と開かれた心が変化を乗り越える鍵

困難な状況でも、心を柔らかく保ち、視野を広く持つことで、方向転換しながら成長していくことができる。
