Located in the Saratoga mountains, Hakone Estate and Gardens has been a place of culture and serenity for over 100 years. One of the oldest residential-style Japanese gardens open to the public in the West, Hakone Gardens is a registered U.S. National Historic Place and cherished for its rich history and authentic cultural representation.

Established in 1915 as a private residence, Isabel Stine traveled to Japan and commissioned imperial gardener Naoharu Aihara to design a sanzo-style garden, and renowned architect Tsunematsu Shintani to build the original two residences in the shoin-style. Enamered by the town of Hakone’s mountain scenery, Mrs. Stine named her new estate Hakone Gardens.
Hakone Gardens became a public park after the City of Saratoga purchased it in 1966. In 2005, Hakone Foundation was formed as an independent non-profit, with the mission to preserve the authenticity of Hakone Estate and Gardens and promote cultural exchange.
Today, Hakone Estate and Gardens offers a variety of cultural education programs, including hanami and yozakura - which showcases the estate’s forty-three sakura trees in bloom each March, and tōrō nagashi every August. A coveted private events venue, Hakone hosts many weddings, corporate business retreats, and also offers private chadō demonstrations in its formal tea house.
Whether strolling beneath the historic fujidana in April, or meditating in the bamboo garden, Hakone Estate and Gardens’ 18-acres offers guests an unparalleled sanctuary to immerse with nature.
